This is an enjoyable route with well marked footpaths and pleasant views of both arable and pasture fields alongside a stream in a shallow valley. It is no problem walking it but there are stiles and kissing gates fortunately dog friendly with sliding boards to allow a dog through. It is not suitable for a wheelchair user. There is a pub and bus stop at Duton Hill if anyone wants to reduce the length they wish to walk. Otherwise there are plenty of pubs and cafes at either end and more frequent bus services. The Travel Essex app gives you times and routes. There is a free car park at Thaxted but car parks in Dunmow are chargeable unless you use the Tesco car park. The walk took me three hours at a slow to moderate pace.
If you are going from Dunmow to Thaxted direction I have included a photo of where the footpath meets the road near Little Easton opposite Elmbridge Farm as it looks as if you are entering private property but there is a footpath signpost on the opposite side of the road and a faded yellow arrow on the gate post. The footpath skirts round the back of the house through their garden and exits at a gate instructing you to put your dog on a lead as there are sheep in the next field (which there were). If you are going in the Thaxted Dunmow direction the footpath goes between two houses at Great Easton which is easily missed (follow the dog's gaze) if you aren't looking out for it. I have attached a photo. There is a footpath signpost showing the way by the war memorial, photo attached.

Countryside walk next to the river chelmer, mainly through farmland (pasture and crop), undulating (hilly in parts) and pretty scenery. Pub stops in Great Dunmow, Little Easton, Great Easton, Duton Hill and Thaxted - stopping at Duton Hill breaks the journey nicely. Good walk, saw buzzard and kestrel too, keep an eye out for the red kites!.
