Description
I devised an alternative route in order to avoid using the nasty isolated rail-side footpath of route one, and also to remove the pointless one mile loop at the Salford end. Instead I stayed south of the A6/A580 and crossed the lovely Buile Hill Park

30 Mar 2024"Market Place Park" aka Churchill Park has had nearly all its trees felled and is now a mucky mess. Planning permission has been granted by Salford Council to build hundreds of houses on this site. It and surrounding areas over as far as Fitzwarren Street will soon be impassable due to building work.

20 Aug 2023From the start on Station road, we headed off up Swinton Hall Road and carried on until reaching a footpath which took use through to more residential streets then along the A6 for a while before heading back along a quieter residential road running parallel which Brough us out at a large roundabout, which has pedestrian subways. Out the other side, there is more paved walking until we crossed the A576 and into the rather excellent Buille Hill Park (keep an eye out for the wood carvings dotted around). Exiting the park, the route then heads through quiet residential streets, before crossing Market Place park and into the centre of Salford. This walk was ok, apart from the stretch through Market Place park, which had seen better days, and appeared to be a good place to fly tip!.

20 Aug 2023The route started from Swinton along the pavement and then a decent footpath until reaching the A6 main road shortly before the big A580 roundabout. We stayed on a residential street just to the north, briefly. (We had planned to have lunch at Hadfield’s Café on the A6 here, but there was an hour’s wait for food! We decided to push on and use the lovely café at Salford Museum and Art gallery at the end of the route, instead.)
The alley through to the roundabout, then the subways and footbridge, were a little tricky to navigate, but I think I got my plotting right!
A few streets brought us to the lovely Buile Hill Park (apparently frequented by LS Lowry). A sign on the fence when we left suggested there was a café in here, but we didn’t see any signs for it as we crossed through. (I think it’s at the south end, which we didn’t pass, and is part-time. If I were to plot this again, I’d take a path to the south west of the line we used.) At the “ey” of Seedley on the OS Map, the alleyway to reach (and then cross) the main road, is hidden behind a wooden fence. It also had a cycle-barrier a fair bit of litter!
The suburban streets into Salford from here had been nicely revamped from their “Coronation Street” days, although there was also a bit of a litter-strewn, grassy wasteland area to cross too. Maybe the road would have been better here? Not the worst I’ve seen on my walks though.
A bit of a mixed route, with good parts and not-so-good parts, but generally worked quite well for the area.
