Description
I walked this route uphill from Kibblesworth to Sunniside on 2nd January 2023.
You exit the town via the aptly named footpath called Clarty Lane, (Muddy Lane) and join the well made nad maintained Bowes Railway Path. You are sharing this complete route with cyclists so be aware of this. This section of the Bowes Railway Path has artworks which give added interest as well as the beautiful farmland and countryside. I found a handy bench above Kibblesworth to look back over the village and valley towards Gateshead.
Once you reach Andrews House Station on the Tanfield Railway you cross the road and follow the well signed and maintained Tanfield Railway Path. This attractive and well maintained path follows the route of the railway all the way to Sunniside and beyond.
The Tanfield Railway is a heritage railway with information along its route as well as working trains run by volunteers. Depending when you are walking you can combine you walk with a train ride!
