Description
This route broadly follows Stoeye One from Stowmarket Station towards Eye Town Centre, however takes a few different detours. First at Saxham Street around 5.7km, it follows the road around to the left then right, instead of circumnavigating Palgrave Farm and following footpaths that are not waymarked. Then just after 10k, in Mendlesham, the route now goes a little further into the town centre passing the convenience store and the Kings Head Pub. After Wetheringsett, on Dale Hill, the turn left onto the footpath is more accurately positioned and then follows the more natural route around the fields out to Thwaite Road before heading right onto The Street towards the Black Horse Pub. And lastly, at the Farmyard near Braiseworth, rather than a convoluted and not obvious or waymarked footpath route, it follows the road lane out towards Braiseworth Road taking you up to Yaxley Road into Eye. Overall its 23.7km roughly 65% on road without pavement, 15% on path/pavement and 20% on trail. There are 2 stiles, a few narrow bridges and some gates that need opening into farmer's fields and onto paths

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Apr 2024This stretch of the walk had some lovely agricultural landscapes, the majority of the walk was along the edges of open fields.
A few tricky bits of navigation that had us a bit confused but please see Thom's review for more details on this.
Walking into Eye along the road was a lot of stopping for cars to pass.
Eye is a lovely village that is worth some further exploring of the castle and church. A few good spots for lunch.

31 Mar 2024Going across larger, wide-open farm fields and closed areas of woods, this is a beautiful path walk with a large variety of landscapes. Make sure to look into earlier reviewer Thom Brisco’s recommendations for adjustments of route, as it can be tricky to stay on track in certain areas.

29 Mar 2024Setting out from Stowmarket, the route climbs gradually to Stowupland which is an interesting, unusual place with attractive thatch-roofed houses and a number of large open village greens / commons. A considerable proportion of this trail is set along roads without footpaths, and so we frequently found ourselves stepping onto verges for cars to pass, but there are attractive off-road stretches east of Mendlesham and north of Thorndon.
A short stretch where Slow Ways’ recommended route would benefit from some adjustment is located beside the point where the trail crosses the Norwich Road. Turning from a field into a small woodland I have marked (in red) the position of the discreet entrance on the attached image.
Arriving at Eye as part of a larger walk on to Norwich, I was amazed by this small town with its beautiful streets, castle folly, imposing church, and curious late-70s-built Castle Hill housing scheme.

19 Sep 2022Nice route, mainly on quiet country roads. Beware of the A140 crossing and be aware of a lack of signed waymarking on the route.
