Bostal Boy
14 Mar 2022An enjoyable but strenuous route which I walked from Pyecombe to Steyning.
The first half of the walk follows the South Downs Way. This includes two steady climbs from Haresdean to Newtimber Hill and from Saddlescombe Farm to the top of Devil's Dyke.
Once you are at the top of the Downs, the route takes you straight down the side of the Fulking Escarpment by possibly the steepest path in Sussex. I think the purpose of this is to go past the Shepherd and Dog pub at the half way point. No denying the pub is a great spot, but isn't open on Monday or Tuesday.
From Fulking, the field paths running beneath and parallel to the Downs are quiet, pleasant and easy to follow. They were also soggy and extremely muddy in March, especially through Longlands Wood. All the while, I kept thinking that the easier route would have been to carry on along the top of the Downs. I think I'll add an alternative STEPYE Two.
The final section across the the water meadows of the River Adur was flat and surprisingly less muddy. Nice views of the Bramber Castles ruins.
Stiles, narrow footbridges, flights of steps, kissing gates, cattle, sheep, horses are all encountered along the way. Plus a very steep climb or descent at Fulking depending on which direction you walk. The route is accurately plotted on the map and well signed on the ground. It took me about 4 hours with a stop to eat my sandwiches.
The views from Fulking Escarpment are beautiful, but I can't convince myself that taking the route this way is necessary - hence only 4*.
