Stainburn is not a tourist attraction, has no facilities of any kind and is not near a bus route so is not a natural or expected Slow Ways destination. If walking to Stainburn it is therefore important to work out how you might get back home! We returned by Pool.
Stating in Harrogate, the route crosses the Stray then continues beside a school and quickly becomes countrified. It crosses the railway on a footbridge and descends into Crimple Valley with a good view of the viaduct on the left. It crosses the main A61 (care needed) and enters Pannal through the village churchyard. When repaired, it goes on the South side of the river to near the pub at Burn Bridge but at the time of writing this path is closed to du a landslip and the path on the North side through the houses needs to be used. From here the good path rises steadily on its way to North Rigton passing along a ridge with fine views. There is another pub at North Rigton for refreshments if needed. After North Rigton the path climbs to Almscliffe Crag, again with fine views. From here it follows Merrybank Lane for a short while before turning right and passing along tracks and through grassy fields to Stainburn. This is a very nice route along mainly good paths with very little road walking

19 Jun 2023I walked this route from Stainburn to Harrogate. I got to the start of the walk by getting a bus to Huby, there is also a railway station at Weeton.
This was a much more pleasant walk that the route from Ilkley to Stainburn, the views of Armcliffe crag an the Red Kites flying overhead were a great start to the day.
You will encounter gates, very narrow gaps, stiles, rough paths, long grass, nettles, steps, and a dangerous road crossing. I encountered sheep and cows on the route.
The path has been altered slightly following a land slip near to ///crouching.repeating.defenders, but it is clearly signed.
Travelling in this direction crossing the A61 at ///gave.middle.bids is dangerous as its a fast dual carriageway without a passenger refuge and the traffic from the right can not be seen clearly due to a bend in the road.

28 Sep 2021This is a lovely walk with plenty of interest and very little road walking. It is well worth walking but remember you have to find some way back because there is no public transport from Stainburn.
