Description

This route is a modified version of Stabren One. It avoids the access issues and includes more green space walking at the Brentwood end.
From the church in Stapleford Abbotts the path goes across fields and next to hedges. The gap onto Curtis Mill Lane is slightly hidden behind mounds of wood chippings, keep left. Curtis Mill lane is a well made track. Turn left as if to enter Curtis Mill Cottage, there is a bridle path on the right. This path, mostly used by deer, was very wet after a very wet February 2024, hopefully this will dry out. This takes you to a lane with verges to avoid the traffic. More open field walking but with no clear path towards the motorway. You have to cross a construction track then pass under the motorway. More fields, tracks, and short road sections lead to the beautiful Mores Woodland. Then the Pilgrim's Lane takes you to and into Brentwood outskirts. A nice path alongside a golf course takes you to suburban roads toward the town centre. A cycle path takes you to the high street.
Lots of stiles (some rickety), narrow bridges, ditches, and mud in winter

09 Mar 2024 Winter

I walked from Stapleford Abbotts to Brentwood.
There is not much in Stapleford, a beautiful Church and a good Gastropub (The Rabbits). A place to walk to, lunch, and walk on. Public transport here is sparse.
Across fields the views are often stunning. There are some good tracks with expensive houses hidden behind fences and high hedges. The bridleway after Curtis Mill Lane was very wet but very pretty. Murthering Lane seems quite busy but there is a verge. There is a small airstrip to cross, part of a pathless field, but I only saw a large herd of deer, no planes at all. There is a road being constructed close to the motorway which needs to be crossed before ducking under the motorway. More fields, short parts along quiet roads, and farm tracks all lead to The Mores Woodland where bluebells were just beginning to pop up, this will look superb when the flowers come out. Pilgrims Lane is a good path leading into Brentwood suburbs. Then another bridle way past a golf course. Two long uphill urban roads lead to the town centre.

This is a beautiful and varied walk, which will be more so in the warmer months. Really it is a 4* route but I gave it 3* because some paths are muddy, signposts have been knocked down so you have to pay attention to navigation in some places, and some stiles are in poor repair. Worth the effort though.
