Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

26 Jan 2023The route is almost all walking on pavements or grass verges beside roads. Given the nature of the area I am not sure it could be anything different. You start by walking downhill through the village of Springwell with some countryside views. You cross over a busy road then walk through a nice village before going through parts of Washington. You know you are walking through a town but the walking is easy.
There are some sections without pavement/footpath and it's either walk on the soft grass verge or on the road itself. When I walked there wasn't a great deal of traffic on this stretch. The next section was along a very busy flat road section which then took you via a footbridge over the A19.
It was then back into housing estates to Hylton Castle.
The next part of the walk I think could do with a diversion as the route took you up waht was barely a path up an extremely steep bit of rough grassland. Once you got to the top there were some fine views.
The final section after more houses was over rough ground and pathways beside and across fields and pastures There were several stiles on this section.
The start of the walk was quite easy going and accesible, later there were sections which were not as accesible. I walked this in January so the final section was very muddy.
