Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 Jun 2024This is a gorgeous route and a pleasure to walk; I travelled north to Durham on a sunny day in June. I have just a few proposed small amendments to the route.
Leaving Spennymoor you follow the curve of an attractive park to reach a nature reserve. Then it is a clear paved or gravel path to Tudhoe and Croxdale. From Sunderland Bridge you join a bridle path through the Croxdale estate, with views of the House.
Shortly afterwards the marked route makes an inexplicable detour into some fields. These have been heavily churned up by the herds of cows present. It's slow going and I can see no benefit to leaving the clear path except perhaps the idea that every Slow Way needs its share of cow manure!
Rejoining (or better, staying on) the bridle path, you reach a farm where there is a rather obscure footpath sign leading down into the woods. This winds and splits a lot, mainly to avoid mud which is probably an issue in wetter seasons. They generally join up again; the main path can be distinguished by occasional built steps.
Coming to the River Wear it eventually straightens and becomes better defined. It turns away from the river to reach Shincliffe where the garden centre has a cafe.
It is then a clear and easy run up a stretch of road to rejoin the riverside path. I followed the river all the way into Durham rather than cutting across the playing fields.
Altogether an excellent and easy route, with the amendments noted above.
