Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Jun 2024The route is clearly marked and you can really get lost as you just have to keep the North sea on your right ads you walk north. the route can be both walked and cycled although perhaps more suitable for off road bikes. the route is definately good enough to be added to Slow Ways. there are some lovely vistas. At the start you can see right down the coast to the Cleveland Hills and even Boulby cliffs, north Yorkshire on a clear day. further north when you reach Marsden you can see the cheviot Hills and up next to the coast Lynemouth Power station and even the church at Newbiggin-by-the-sea. I have done this route many times and never tire of walking it. Its preferable to the north side of the Tyne as its no where near as busy.

24 Feb 2023I don't have a whole lot to add but endorse the comments of the previous reviewers. I walked this from South Shields to Whitburn as part of a longer journey from Jarrow to Sunderland. It was a cold sunnny day lovely walking weather. I made a slight detour in South Shields to get some fish and chips from my favourite shop. The path is well signed and on this day the path was fairly dry with some avoidable muddy patches.

16 Jan 2023I loved this route! There's lots to see on this coastal walk from Whitburn to South Shields including a labyrinth, lighthouse, birds and beaches. I walked this route in winter, it was very muddy in parts and quite desolate. It gets busy as you approach South Shields at Trow Point. There are loos and cafes at the end. I would defo recommend.

18 Apr 2022Apart from a short section at the start this is a lovely coastal route. At the start there is a local museum for those interested and some interesting architecture as you walk to the seafront where there is a nice below-ground Victorian public toilet if like me you like a bit of nostalgia (and another one above ground, no stairs, also victorian farther along the route). The route to the seafront could have gone through South Sheilds park instead of a road. The walk starts amongst the sand dunes if you prefer, or you can walk off road but on a pedestrianised path. There were coastal birds on the clifftop pathway which is mostly level and gravel but with some undulations. This is obviously a walk for people who like sea views as it hugs the seafront high up, passing small coves below which are accessible. It passes 2 lighthouses.
