Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Apr 2023This is a popular local walk and follows the Cleveland Way from Saltburn to Skelton (although most people actually walk the Cleveland Way in the opposite direction).
Start point is Saltburn Railway Station, where there are toilets and a big supermarket next door.
I did this walk as a circular from Skelton to Brotton then Saltburn and back to Skelton, but you could make a good circular route if you come to Saltburn on the train.
I walked this route on a lovely spring evening.
The route starts at the station and heads South from the station to a large junction where you will see a children's playground on the other side of the road. Just past the playground you take the path down into the Valley Gardens from which you follow the Cleveland Way. Soon you find yourself in a gorge where it is difficult to imagine that you are still right on the edge of the town with houses only a few yards away.
After about a kilometre the path turns down hill and the amazing sight of Saltburn Viaduct comes into view; if you don't know it is there, it is quite a surprise. A green meadow is between you and the viaduct, and you can certainly cross the meadow to see the viaduct better, but the path turns left towards the beck and then right after a short distance to go under the viaduct and cross the beck via a stout footbridge. The path then climbs out of the gorge, where there are some steps, and around a field before crossing Skelton Bypass via an underpass. You walk up past a beck between houses onto Bowland Road.
You are now in a large, fairly new housing estate. At the time of writing the old Cleveland Way route is inaccessible because of a large building site. You are advised to follow the diversion which is not clearly marked. However, if you turn left along Bowland Road, and follow the road uphill keeping the building site on your right, you will reach the Hillside Medical Centre - walk past this and then take the second left (Derwent Road) which is back on the Cleveland Way and leads you uphill to the High Street.
Skelton High Street has a big co-op and two good deli/sandwich shops where you can eat in or take out.

19 Jun 2021I walked from Saltburn- by-the Sea to Skelton-in-Cleveland this morning (and back). It was a wonderful walk, mainly through deciduous woodland. It follows Skelton Beck through the valley and can be a bit of a climb at times but well worth the puff ! This is a popular path mainly used by folk walking down to Saltburn’s beautiful beach or to work in the town. It is safe and sheltered from North Sea winds but not suitable for wheelchair users sadly as there are some steep and gravelly parts of the path. The main road to be crossed has an underpass.
