Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 May 2024We walked from Newmillerdam to Skelmanthorpe in the rain, but I'm not sure that better weather would have improved it much. It's an OK route (other than the important route changes highlighted with ***** below) but none of it is very interesting. Just about scrapes 2 stars.
Comments as follows:
Shortly after leaving Newmillerdam (up School Hill), there's a nicer route through Newmillerdam Village Green, which just cuts a little off the pavement walking.
Keep an eye out for the turning off Stoney Lane (into Hollingthorpe Court), although if you miss it, you can turn down Hollingthorpe Lane at the mini roundabout.
The OS map marks the footpath beside a house, but we had to go a bit further down the lane to a clear gap in the hedge and then follow the field round to a wood. We stayed in the field, skirting the wood but there is a path through the wood that connects to the same end point.
The road up and over the M1 is clear and then doubles back on the other side.
******* The route suggests you can cross the railway on a footpath. You can't. There was a bridge once, but there certainly hasn't been any public access for some years. Instead you need to stay on Dennington Lane until it meets Bretton Lane where you turn left. The Station pub is open most of the time or you can take the short detour along Branch Road to the excellent Blacker Hall Farm Shop and Cafe. *******
The footpath from Bretton Lane to Denby Dale Road across a couple of fields starts off well marked, but then isn't very clear. In particular, towards the end you need to look closely to spot the small footbridge over the stream.
The path is more obvious after crossing the road, and the route is more pleasant through Bullcliff Wood, climbing up to the A637 (Bar Road). Cross carefully and descend through the golf course and across fields to the woods.
Again, the path is reasonably clear through the woods. Cross the stream and then follow the route across a number of (muddy) fields with some cows to Emley, where there's a small convenience store open every day.
Leave Emley on a track at the end of Tyburn Lane, which connects to Park Lane. Take care on this short section of road as there is no pavement and some difficult sight lines for vehicles.
Leave the road at a farm and cross some more (muddy) fields (with more cows). The paths aren't that clear but Skelmanthorpe is obvious (ahead) and the few houses of Silver Ings are the landmark to head towards.
From here it's a track up to Strike Lane and then road into Skelmanthorpe.
