Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

17 Jun 2021I started this route at Shiremoor not Northumbrland Park so can't do survey. The path at Shiremoor is close to Boundary Mills where you can get refreshments and toilet facilities. The path starts on a paved street. When you turn on to the track, it is fairly narrow, maximum 1m but parts are down to 1/2m. It is a narrow path with grass at either side.
At the end of the track you turn left on to a narrow contry lane with no verges. It has several bends to Murton Village. There are footpaths through the village. You walk past the Robin Hood pub. Per the board outside it is doing take-away food. At the end of the village you join a wide untarred track. Follow the track to a 'cross roads'. Turn left. The track here is narrower. At the end is a gap in the fence about 1/2m wide. From here you turn right down a narrow track and then round a school field. Afteer this you are on to narrow estate streets until you cross a main road. At this point there is an Aldi with customer toilets. You then go past the football club and across a grasses area by the cricket club. There are some steps taking you down to the road. The through a few narrow streets to Whitley Bay metro station. These street have very little traffic but there are cars parked on the pavement along most of them.
An alternate route from the 1/2m gap in the fence it to go straight ahead to a roundabout. Here there is a butchers, bakers, fish and chip shop, a convenience shop, and 100m to the left is a Co-op and the Foxhunters pub which serves meals and has customer toilets. Go stright over the roundabout (pelican crossing to both to the right and left). Follow the road to Monkseaton village. There are wide pavements on either side. Along the way is a sandwich shop on the right and a fish and chip shop on the left. At Monkseton there is a Spar, Ship Inn (toilet, limited food), Black Horse (Toilets), Monkseaton Arms (toilets, food), Millicans Bakers, Chinese takeaway, fish and chip shop, snadwich shop and small restaurant. You go up a slight incline to Monkseaton Metro station. Turn right here. In the station there is a pub, the Left Luggage and a coffee shop. Follow the road to the junction. Turn right here in to Whitley Bay (there are plenty of coffee shops on the road to the left). Follow the road, stright across the first set of traffic lights. Turn right at the second set of light. Whitley Bay metro station is at the end of this street. In Whitley Bay there are several pubs, butchers, bakers, including Greggs, fish and chip shops and several restaurants.
I would walk it again. It is suitable for able bodied people but the stretch from Shiremoor to Murton is unsuitable for wheeled users, especially wheelchairs and double buggies. Single buggies may get round.
The route is longer than stated. The section from Shiremoor to Whitley Bay is about 4 miles.
