Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Jul 2022This route passes some beautiful countryside in the South Devon AONB. Part of it follows the popular south west coast path, with stunning views, but the inland section is much less well-trodden and is equally enjoyable for its tranquility, lovely green lanes and pretty, historic villages.
The route has some very challenging gradients, as expected, and some steps, so not suitable for all. Lovely villages of Slapton and Strete provide refreshment opportunities as do kiosks at Strete Gate and Blackpool Sands. Also plenty in Dartmouth.
I walked this in conjunction with Kinshe so didn’t get public transport to Sherford so I don’t know what the options are. Plenty of public transport connections from Dartmouth though with a short ferry hop to Kingswear providing even more options.
No access issues on route (apart from steep gradients as above).
It follows a mix of unsurfaced lanes, footpaths, bridleways and quiet country lanes. Pavements in Dartmouth. Short section of walking along the A379 at Strete but in a 20mph zone and one crossing of the A379 between Strete and Blackpool Sands but good visibility.
Route was a little unclear approaching Blackpool Sands from Widewell - the slow way follows a recorded footpath rather than the swcp at that point but the latter is more obvious and waymarked. Both were available but the swcp probably easier. Only a minor difference between them on the map.
All in all a very enjoyable route - felt like a bit of an adventure - through varied scenery. I’d happily walk it again.
