27 Apr 2024Walked from Sarn to Pencoed. Nice walk, mostly across common land which was a bit boggy in parts. No waymarking to speak of, so needed to keep an eye on the route.

16 Oct 2023October 2023. Direction: Pencoed to Sarn.
An excellent ridge walk - not very high, but enough for good views across the valleys either side. After crossing the cattle grid at Pencoed to enter the common land, it seemed like a different world. There`s a fairly steep climb up on to the ridge, but then it levels out fairly well. It`s not easy walking in places as the ground underfoot is very uneven in parts and you need to be able to jump puddles and streams, as it`s very boggy in places. I did this walk after a spell of a few dry days and there was still lots of standing water around. Lovely views down into the Crymlyn valley and across to Heol y Cyw. There`s a nice green sward of grass to follow along the ridge for quite a way and then further on, the bracken had been cut to make a path, so it`s easy to navigate.

04 Jun 2023On a beautiful summers day I decided to complete this route from Pencoed. Walking up on Cefn Hirgoed was a short sharp shock and very steep. Once on the ridge it’s easy walking and far reaching views across the region. It was very dry today but normally the common is very boggy and water logged. So if it’s been raining in the previous week, be prepared with decent footwear.
Following to main thoroughfare across the common is fairly straight forward. As it’s open access land it doesn’t matter too much if you deviate from the path.
There are three quiet country roads to cross before you descend gently into Sarn with decent transport links and shops to occupy you.
As an added treat I then ventured up to Parc Slip to visit the cafe and walk around the nature reserve. It’s recommended if you have the time!.
