Description
A replacement for SafHav 1 which avoids some unsafe road walking along 50mph Burton Road outside Haverhill highlighted in a review. It's largely based on the original route and changes suggested by SuffolkJohn, who knows the area.
There are not many facilities along this route, based on internet searching. There is a pub in Ashdon under fairly new management, (previously?) called the Rose and Crown, not sure about food or hours. Ashdon also has a small village museum and a restored 18th century windmill, although both are a bit off this route. https://ashdonparish.co.uk/landmarks. Castle Camps also has a pub, called the Oak. The website seems a little out of date and the facebook page is still under "The Cock", an earlier name. There are a few buses through Ashdon and Castle Camps, although not on Sundays, but I couldn't find any places to stay overnight

19 Aug 2024Pleasant enough walk generally and a good alternative to the problems identified in SafHav 1 up until Castle Camps. But with enough footpath problems between there and Camps End that I can't recommend it. Paths in reality don't match official positions on OS, Essex Council and at other times OSM maps. Big nettle problem. (Photos 6, 7, 8). Followed by belated discovery that said path combo is generally avoided by Strava heat map contributors. Basically full of possible pitfalls and better avoided. Is that why there's a defibrillator and a bench at the far end (9, 10)? Screenshot of suggested potential alternative attached, it may even have a view of some medieval ruins.
I tested a slightly different route through Ashdon with advice from friendly staff at Beeches (garden) Nursery, where I also got some very welcome cold drinks. That included a tarmac path that runs next to Church Hill but is up a steep slope and behind trees. It's not shown on OS maps or the Essex County Council maps.
I'd like to submit an alternative but hopefully that's enough to give you an idea of a more productive route to try out in meantime.
