Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

04 May 2021Review of SlowWays route Rutcam (Rutherglen to Cambuslang)
I walked this route on a rainy day in May 2021. The route is very straightforward and only takes about 30 – 45 minutes. It follows the main car route between the two town centres so is a bit noisy and not particularly scenic.
The route starts in the centre of Rutherglen with the imposing buildings of the Town Hall and St Columbkille's Catholic Church facing each other across the main street. There is a pleasantly busy shopping street with some older buildings among the modern brick facades. The route soon leaves the town centre and enters more residential areas. There is an interesting mix of post war and more modern buildings as well as some ornamental trees such as Copper Beech and Flowering Cherry. In one garden are two Monkey Puzzle trees which must have been planted to frame the path up to the house but have grown so much that they now obscure the whole building.
It is hard to detect where Rutherglen becomes Cambuslang but it is probably around the junction with Bogleshole Road where a group of red sandstone-faced buildings is on the right and a modern block of flats on the left.
The route continues slightly uphill into Cambuslang, passing Fratelli’s Diner and a racing kart track before arriving at the town’s railway station. All in all, a very simple walk along a main road with the only issues being traffic noise and the large number of side roads that have to be crossed. I'm not sure I would walk it again or recommend it to others. However it is a perfectly safe route which is accurately drawn.
The route might have been varied a little by making use of paths running parallel to the main road as it leaves Rutherglen. On my return journey, I walked along the Clyde Walkway which although considerably longer (five miles instead of two) and quite isolated in places, I found a much more pleasant route.
