Help connect Rutherglen
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Rutherglen’s Slow Ways.

The sections through Linn Park and King's Park are lovely - swathes of daffodils when I did the walk (early April) and lots of bird life. At the start of the stretch through Braidholm Recreation Ground, walk on the path outside the perimeter hedge - I had to retrace my steps when I walked on tge inside! The last section along Kingsbridge Drive is long and straight - for me, the least attractive part of the walk....

Cathkin Braes offers a great variety of paths, so you can easily vary the route. From the top of the Braes there are striking views of the city, Campsie Hills and higher peaks beyond....

This walk has some lovely sections beside the Clyde and through Glasgow Green. Easy to access and straightforward to navigate....

Walk this routeFrom central Rutherglen the route follows a main road to the river Clyde, and crosses the road bridge to the north side. It is designed to connect directly to the Rutherglen-Cambuslang slow way at the riverside, giving a continuous riverside route from Glasgow to Cambuslang (and on to Uddingston), without the need to pass through Rutherglen town centre....

Walk this routeThere is a small stretch of path along the riverside beside the Police Scotland building that is having work done on it, but this is easily detoured by using the road bridge instead of the Shawfield footbridge and using the path on the other side of the river (April '22). This is a nice route when you are following the Clyde walkway. It is also the main cycle route....

A right turn at the T-junction leads into the equally busy Clarkston Road which is followed uphill until the entrance to Linn Park is reached on the left. Eventually the route turns left into Carmunnock Road before entering Kings Park at its southwest corner. There is a footbridge up a ramp to the right to help with the road crossing, then all that remains is an easy downhill section to Rutherglen Main Street and the end of the route....

This is a rather noisy but nevertheless interesting route which makes good use of some urban green spaces. The route then heads through Govanhill, crossing the lively Victoria Road, passing the important community amenity of Govanhill Park and travelling down a rather neglected stretch of Cathcart Road....

Leaving the edge of the village, the route heads downhill through farmland. Just after the main road passes the village greens, the route deviates north to enter Cathkin Braes Country Park. Eventually the route reaches the main parking area in the country park with more views, this time to the north. From the car park, the route heads roughly east, along the south eastern boundary of the park, passing a wind turbine, a telecommunications tower and another viewpoint named Queen Mary’s Seat. I deducted one star because the section through the woods between the country park and Tormusk Road might feel a little remote to someone walking alone...

The route starts in the centre of Rutherglen with the imposing buildings of the Town Hall and St Columbkille's Catholic Church facing each other across the main street. It is hard to detect where Rutherglen becomes Cambuslang but it is probably around the junction with Bogleshole Road where a group of red sandstone-faced buildings is on the right and a modern block of flats on the left. The route might have been varied a little by making use of paths running parallel to the main road as it leaves Rutherglen...
