Shedges
31 May 2021I walked this Slow Way on Monday 31st May (bank holiday Monday). Overall I would say the route is acceptable, though not particularly inspiring as it is predominantly on pavements and roads (with some busy sections and crossings where care should be taken).
The route starts from Royston station and proceeds on a pavement beside a busy A road for about a mile and a half - there are a few large roundabouts to cross which do not have pedestrian crossings. After this the route joins a gravel track between two fields, this section was very quiet (just two cyclists and their dogs) and nice for spotting birds in the hedgerows.
The track ended at a busy road which I then had to cross, this could be a bit of a concern with children or if not able to cross the road quickly as the cars come very fast.
After this the route is on a pavement beside a quiet country road leading through the village of Melbourn which is very picturesque and has a number of options for refreshments e.g. The Dolphin pub, a Coop, and a village store. The route follows the cycle route out of the village and then bears right across a field (this is not signposted). The route continues through Kingsway golf centre on the grass besides the 'football golf' area, before crossing a stile onto a quiet road. The road has no pavement and is single track with some passing places, and I climbed onto the verge whenever a car came past. Though cars were not going too fast, I would be a bit concerned about this road in bad weather or low light conditions.
The route continued onto a main road, passing the 'El Cafecito' cafe which has good coffee and a range of food options, as well as toilet facilities and space to sit down both inside and out. From El Cafecito the route follows the road round until it meets a public footpath signposted to Foxton. This was probably the nicest part of the walk, a well-marked footpath across the fields and through a small wooded area, crossing some footbridges over a small stream.
Once in Foxton the route leads on the pavement through the village up to the railway station where the route ends.
