Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

20 Jul 2023Review of Slow Ways route Roscar one (Rosebank to Carluke)
I walked this route in reverse (i.e. Carluke to Rosebank) on 28th March 2023 but did not get around to typing up my review until now (July 2023). The route begins with a mostly downhill path out of Carluke along pavements and passes under the railway line near Carluke Station whereupon it quickly enters open country. The pavement is left behind at this point and the next kilometer or so is along a fairly quiet country road. At Oakbank the route leaves the road and follows a muddy path alongside Jock’s Burn until it rejoins the road via a slightly wider path called Raes Road. Both of these sections are signposted so navigation is easy, but the surface would possibly cause issues for cycles and certainly for other wheelers. The road (Milton Road) is now followed westwards and passes a monument marking the birthplace of Major General William Roy (founder of the mapping system that became the Ordnance Survey). At an obvious bend in the road, the route enters the Milton Lockhart Estate through high gates in a high fence. There is a very misleading sign here stating that walkers should “respect our rights to a reasonable level of privacy and security by not passing beyond this point”. However the sign is erroneous in that “this point” is not here but some 400 metres further down the estate drive (and clearly signposted there). Therefore it is fine to proceed through the gates on what appears to be a South Lanarkshire Council designated core path. The going here is good but from the point where the route leaves the estate drive, the surface is very variable with some steep sections, some muddy paths and some sections of boardwalk. For the reasonably agile walker, these challenges are easily overcome, but anyone using other means of travel may have difficulty. Eventually the path reaches the Clyde and here the way becomes easier again with a wide (although still potentially muddy) path. It is then relatively simple to follow the river north to the crossing point at Mauldslie Bridge, and then follow the road south to Rosebank. The route is not without its challenges, namely muddy and steep sections and some road walking without pavement. However I had no difficulty myself and would therefore recommend it.
