Description
A short and pretty easy walk which enjoys the beautiful centre of Rochester, quiet residential streets and a number of small parks, with a great view across the looping River Medway. It’s very similar to RocCha 1 but easier to follow in the parks, less steep and more scenic as it passes along Rochester High Street.
The start goes along a very historic and lovely part of Rochester High Street instead of beside the busy traffic on the 4-lane A2. From here it’s very much like RocCha 2, going past the Castle and Cathedral, through quiet streets and some small parks. The other main change is through a chain of three parks towards Chatham. This version is fitted to the paths. RocCha 1 did not and choice of path can quickly make a big difference on such a steep hillside. Both the OS and OSM mapping are a bit misleading here. Staying higher up the hill also has more of the impressive views across the river.

To get from the station to Rochester High Street goes through the pretty courtyard called La Providence and avoids the A2 but it isn’t brilliantly signposted. From the station side it is under a small red brick arch. From the High St side the steps in the corner are tricky to spot until you are close.
Step-free alternatives to La Providence: 1) walk straight through the Visitor Centre (rear is painted “Historic Rochester”) or 2) turn right along the A2 a little way to Northgate, you miss the High Street but will pass some public loos.
Near the top of Fort Pitt Hill is a very short flight of steps. See screenshot. Step-free: either get around them over the grass, or stay on the pavement around the park.
There are some slightly steep sections of around 100m or less. Some cobbles and other stone paving in Rochester. Some loose material over old brick and tarmac on RRX20 byway outside the Uni building above Fort Pitt Gardens. See screenshot. Otherwise it’s tarmac or paving slabs all the way. Most kerbs appear dropped on G St View but I didn’t check it in person

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
