Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 May 2022The route from Clayton-le-Moors heads downhill along a residential street, then turns off to join an off-road footpath behind some bungalows, and then down a fenced alleyway to meet a (possibly muddy) track downhill. At the start of the cobbled section, a steep cobbled path (with bollards at both ends) leads off to the left, down to the bridge over Hyndburn Brook.
After passing a field with some stables, the OS Map shows a footpath off to the left, but this doesn’t exist, and it is necessary to continue up to the top by the pylons, where a footpath sign points into a field.
A short way along the fence is a stile crossing it, which must be used. At the top, a very large field opens out. The public footpath shown on the OS Map is not apparent at all on the ground, at any point. Therefore, the best option is to follow the field perimeter along the south east of the field, which follows the contours at the top of the slope down to the river valley. There is a straight farm lane leading to the farm and livery stables at Tottleworth, parallel to the line of pylons. You can see this from parts of the field, and the gate at the near end of this, is where you are aiming for. There is a bit of evidence of a trodden path this way, although, at the time I walked it, the field had long grass in it and was a bit wet and muddy in places. Great views all around though!
At the farm you need to pass between the actual stables and a lovely renovated old farmhouse, and through a gate onto the road. After passing another lovely old house (dated 1758) the route takes a sharp left turn into a gravelled path with a bollard in the middle of it. This path was a bit wet and muddy but it was a nice route to bring you out at the canal bridge.
From this point it would be nice to use the canal towpath southwards to reach the centre of Rishton, but this route follows residential streets.
