23 Jun 2023Walked from Rhymney to Bargoed. Nice, scenic walk, easy to follow as it's mostly along a cycle path.

02 Jul 2022July 2022. Direction: Bargoed to Rhymney.
An excellent walk overall, starting with a nice steady plod gently uphill on the cycle path from Bargoed all the way up to Fochriw and through the beautiful Cwm Darran Park. It`s worth the extra walk around Ogilvie Lake and the visitor centre is a good place to break off for a drink.
On leaving the road at Fochriw football club, the field is a bit of a quagmire with very clumpy marsh grass, so that you can`t see where you are planting your feet. It`s only for a short stretch though, maybe 200 metres, so worth persevering (carefully) and then you`re on to the open field with shorter grass.
After walking down Hill Road, it`s a straight forward walk along the main road from Pontlottyn to Rhymney, the last stretch on a footpath parallel to main the road.

12 May 2021This is the route I had to create as Rhybar1 is impractical as the routes out of Rhymney do not exist. Follow the tracks north of Rhymney Station, cross the tracks and this will take you to a pleasant footpath that takes you as far as the main road and then Pontlottyn. You do then have to climb a really steep hill up a quietish road with no pavement, but only for a short distance. When you get on to the common land, you can walk beside the road on the grass.
The path into Fochriw was an absolute mudbath, but it was easy to give up and walk down the streets.
From Fochriw, the route is really easy both to walk and navigate as it is a fully paved sustrans route all the way to Bargoed. It's a lovely walk, make sure to stop at Parc Cwm Darren for cake and coffee at the visitor centre.
