Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Oct 2023I’ve walked, run and cycled this route many times. It’s good footpaths all the way and mostly off the roads. An alternative route exists down the middlewood way which runs parallel to this canal route.

08 Oct 2023 (edited 02 Nov 2023)Started at Poynton. Footpath and minor road for the first 2km before a short section on public footpaths. Walked in October the paths were narrow in places with deep grass and likely prone to waterlogging and mud after prolonged rain - indeed the section just before the canal was quite muddy on our walk.
The nature of this section of the route, along with a number of stiles and kissing gates, means this section is unsuitable for anything but foot traffic - it is around 1km.
Once you arrive at the canal towpath (there is another route that follows The Middlewood Way instead if preferred) it is easy walking on stony canal path, quite picturesque.
The final section crosses the canal at Clarence Mill using an obvious footbridge (NB the gpx route crosses the canal slightly before the bridge - ignore this unless you want wet feet…) before dropping down an easy slope into Bollington. There are large free car parks and several pubs/cafes/restaurants at each end of the route.

25 Oct 2023Hi Ian! Thanks so much for your review of this route. I've just walked it and noticed that, when you walk it from the other direction, it's easy to overshoot the footbridge at Bollington because the route is slightly off. I've corrected this here https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Poybol/10770/Review#overview - would you be up for copying your review over to that route version? Thanks!

03 Nov 2021This scenic route connects Poynton and Bollington, mainly using the towpath along the Macclesfield Canal. There is a fairly steep ascent by the side of the aqueduct to gain access to the canal at the Bollington end of the route, followed by a bridge with stairs/ramps to cross the canal to the towpath going North. The towpath is generally in good condition with occasional muddy stretches after wet weather. After leaving the towpath to descend into Poynton there are some stiles (see example photo) to climb over before the route continues a gradual descent along a narrow footpath - with some muddy sections. Both the stiles and a narrowed gateway (intended to prevent unauthorised vehicle access - see picture) would restrict usage by wheeled carriages generally (unless they were light enough to be lifted over the obstacles). The final section involves walking along series of residential streets to arrive at the crossroads in the centre of Poynton.
