25 Jan 2023I walked from Usk to Pontypool on a crisp January morning. The route took me over fields, rolling hills and past the serene Llandegfedd reservoir, which is a lovely place to stop for coffee and a snack in the impressive cafe and visitor centre. Ends with a pleasant stroll through Pontypool Park, past the famous rugby ground and into the town of Pontypool. A lovely, enjoyable winter walk that was easy to follow in the most part, would definitely recommend. Worth putting up with miserable bus drivers between Pontypool and Usk.

26 Mar 2022This was a nice walk from Pontypool to Usk, much of it along lanes (not much traffic today). Footpaths were easy to navigate, though I had to climb over a heavy metal gate near HMP Prescoed.
If walking from Usk, the footpath is clearly marked from the road (just right of the bridge) but isn’t so obvious from the field facing the wooded slope: walk straight on past the dilapidated orange truck (see pic) and look for the broken stile and path heading diagonally up the slope.

13 Mar 2022 (edited 22 May 2023)This is a lovely walk, mainly through country lanes and fields. Starting out through Pontypool Park, the path leads through a lane and under the Mon & Brec canal (Photo 1). After walking through New Inn village, the path heads into the countryside lanes (Photo 2) and the first series of fields. The path then joins another lane (Sluvad Road), which can get quite busy at certain times. This takes you past Llandegfedd Reservoir (Photo 3) and Coed-y-Paen village, before winding its way towards Usk. There is an alternative route by turning left at Coed-y-Paen and re-joining the original road several miles further on, which generally has less traffic. At the entrance to Cefn Ila (Woodland Trust reserve, worth a little detour), the path then cuts across the fields to Usk town. Overall, an excellent walk with fine views across the fields, woodlands and hills.
