Description
This route is intended for wheels of all types, although it is also a great route for walking. Most it is along the Sirhowy Valley Line path and Cycle Route 47. The surfaces are metalled all the way, although there is some variability on the standard of the paths. It`s fairly flat most of the way, but there is one short section up or down a fairly steep incline (where the 47 cycle route meets the Sirhowy Valley Line path, near Wattsville). Most of the route is on very good quality tarmac, but there is a short rough section at the beginning and end of the Tram Road between Gelligroes and Pontllanfraith (maybe 200-300 metres in total)

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this route, but it`s a good alternative for wheeling (wheels of all types). A lot of it follows route 47 cycle path and quite a bit of this is along the Sirhowy Valley Line path, which is a very gradual gradient going up the valley. The only section that`s not good quality tarmac / path / pavement is the Tram Road between Gelligroes and Pontllanfraith, but the poor section is only around 200-300 metres in total (no problem on a bike, but maybe a little rough in a wheelchair). The width limitation is at the end of the cycle path at Gelligroes as it leads on to Gelli Groes Road (Photo 5), but there is at least 1 metre between the bollards.
For an even better 5-star route, you could go straight up Mill Street from Risca station and join the 47 cycle route at the canal. Coming from Pontllanfraith, just stay on the 47 cycle route as far as Mill Street. There are a couple of fairly steep hills to negotiate (Mill Street itself and the path leading down from the canal at Cross Keys)
