Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Jun 2022Just about the most sensible and direct walking route from the centre of Ponteland village to the Kingston Park / Fawdon area, or vice versa, which offers a very nice walking experience with regards to variation in the surroundings.
It's a nice varied route, depicted very accurately here, which will take you (assuming starting from Ponteland in this description) through some well-established and well-cleared/pathed footpaths which are scenic and offer views of surrounding fields and are great for bikes and probably horses etc. as well as for walking; past the Airport in a way which lets you take a look at the airport front building; then along Ponteland Road quite parallel to the Metro line which in many places allows you to view the trains going by, including taking you through the quiet and picturesque village of Woolsington and then past some (as of 2022) new or in-progress housing estates, ending with a cut through some housed areas via some well-paved footpaths taking you through to Fawdon.
The quality of the paths or pavements (and for bicycles road sides) throughout, etc., mean it could definitely be walked/jogged and/or cycled along with, and indeed covered with pushchair or similar. It would make a very nice (though perhaps quite long) dog walking route too. It would probably also be suitable for those in wheelchairs or mobility scooters, though I can't say for sure since I do not use either of these myself so this is purely a guess based on my informal survey of the paths.
There are a number of places along the way or at the start/end-points which could be used to stop for refreshments or toilet breaks, including pubs or shops in Ponteland centre or by or inside the Airport, and a village tea room in Woolsington. (If you went a bit off the registered route here, there is the centre of Kingston Park with a big Tesco and other stores, too, for example.)
The route is safe during the light hours, with the most dangerous aspect probably being the crossing by Newcastle Airport Roundabout which can be quite busy traffic-wise. Children should definitely be supervised closely there and generally on the road-side parts. I would strongly advise against taking this route during any semi-dark or dark hours due to the secluded nature of the footpaths which are in most places not lit (not at all for the Ponteland-side bridleways).
