06 Dec 2023Leaving Padiham used an unnecessary very steep short road, although this isn’t obvious from the OS map. Grove Lane was pleasant with a nice view back across the River Calder to Gawthorpe Hall. The Burnley Way, across sheep pasture and through woods was really nice, although there were some muddy and short steep sections within it.
Just before the motorway, I got a glimpse of the mosque at Brierfield which is close to the end of the route. After crossing the motorway, I had to cross some fields containing horses and electric fencing. The path up from the canal has been moved slightly to the north, although this is easy to follow on the ground.
A lot of this route was really lovely, but there are a few points where I would adjust it, and I will do so in an alternative version, soon.
I will have to fail the route for the time being, because a footbridge next to the River Calder at OS Grid Ref: SD 82257 35546 has collapsed, but the council appears to intend fixing it very promptly. I will walk this section again, when I try out my alternative route soon, when I should be able to approve this route too, as long as the repair has been actioned.
