11 Sep 2024The route left Orrell down a tidy, well-used footpath behind houses, through a tunnel under the motorway, then around a wheat field with open views. After this was a short field with an abundance of animal warning signs, but containing just some uninterested donkeys.
A couple of housing streets led to a long set of tarmac paths through open grassy spaces between housing. This was quite pleasant although I did spot a few bits of broken glass. There were a couple of marker posts which could be used as seating.
Eventually this arrived at the large retail, entertainment, and sports complex, dominated by the huge DW Stadium, which the route went round. I think it might be a good idea to avoid this route on busy match days!!
The route crossed over the River Douglas, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, then under the railway, before following roads, past Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls factory, to Wigan Wallgate Station.
Quite an interesting and diverse route, which I followed with a drink at Wigan Central under the bridge from Wigan NW Station, before my train home.
