Help connect Orrell
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Orrell’s Slow Ways.

A few side roads, a short path across a green, then a long curving road around the Heinz factory, which brings us to the next footpath: earth and loose stone once more, and, once over a footbridge, runs alongside some fences. Along the sunken track of Standish Wood Lane (look out for the medieval cross stumps), the muddy footpath becomes an unpaved residential road (at time of survey, it was being resurfaced, but was scheduled to be there for long, but there were footpath closures)....

Quite an interesting and diverse route, which I followed with a drink at Wigan Central under the bridge from Wigan NW Station, before my train home....

After leaving the residential roads (I’d have preferred to leave them earlier by going straight on past the school and using Beech Walk), the off-road Standish Wood Lane was really very nice, with loads of squirrels, although there were some large puddles to avoid. I chose the south east side, as the wheat crop had recently been harvested, but the other side (which in retrospect, I suspect is the correct route) looked very overgrown and wild. The final lane into Orrell ran behind houses and looked tidy and well-used....

Whilst it is accessible for all, as it uses pavements and no footpaths or obstacles, and all road crossings are good, it is a road walk along some of the major roads that tun into Wigan, which make it very boring! Also, the route map is not entirely accurate; it has odd kinks in it and ignores corners or curves of the road, or ignores entire roads altogether, which means you have to make educated guesses. Not the best....

Eventually we reach a rough track through small woods which runs towards a farm, where we take a small footpath between hedge and fence, before ducking through a gap in the hedge and heading along a farm track towards the houses and the road ahead. The path is along a farm track running through fields of oats and wheat, and rejoins the road at a gateless junction. We can exit using the car park entrance, or continue ahead along another stretch of path, before emerging onto the road via a kissing gate. Onto the road, which is paved, we pass Orrell station, then head up a residential road....

Whilst entirely functional, as has mentioned already in Andrew's previous review, this not a particularly exciting route and includes a bizarre deviation from the main road around Newtown. If taking this route, the alternative "Orrwig Two" would be preferable....

First, the route from Eskdale over the roundabout to Tanhouse Road isn't quite as straightforward as the route suggests. Lastly, there is no pavement or safe way of crossing the main road to get to the route uphill. I've updated it slightly for SkeOrr Two for a safer and more accurate route....

Walk this routeIt is rather boring and follows Ormskirk Road except for a bizarre diversion down Tunstall Lane for no apparent reason....

One could go down Beacon Road, then turn left down the footpath and follow the perimeter of the housing estate but that's unnecessary deviation....
