Description
Slow Ways through an urban landscape are a compromise, direct and easy against quiet and interesting. This walk tries to avoid main road pavements while keeping to the least hilly route already claimed by motor vehicles. You may choose to ignore the back streets and remain on the noisy and busy main roads

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

22 Nov 2023 (edited 23 Nov 2023)Walked from Nottingham to Arnold. Not the most direct route available or the greenest, but it is easy, has plenty of facilities and took me to a number of places that I have never been despite having spent most of my life in and around Nottingham. The only thing I would question is using the dingy alleyway to Norfolk Place to leave the Old Market Square rather than the easier, wider and better lit Queen Street (it is perfectly safe all the same so not a major issue).
The route broadly follows the line of Mansfield Road, the main road to Arnold, but most of it is on quieter side streets. Places I had never visited before were: the alleyway to Norfolk Place, the route north of Forest Road down into Mapperley Park (the short path down from Chestnut Grove to St Andrews Road is a little steep but has a handrail), the street route from Woodthorpe Grange Park northwards and Arnot Hill Park. So plenty of interest, and definitely a better route than the snailed Notarn two,.

14 Dec 2022I walked from Arnold with a friend. We enjoyed this walk, an area known to us that still offered a few surprises. No steps so easy walking and safe road crossings. It passes through Sherwood a busy and vibrant suburban shopping area.
From the well located meeting place in Arnold this Slow Way starts along the pedestrianised edge of the shopping area then a section of pavement that links to the retail park on the former Home Brewery site. A gate in the high sandstone wall gives access to the tranquil Arnot Hill Park.
Quiet tree lined roads lead eventually to the edge of Woodthorpe Park but there is no entrance so we have to follow the perimeter to meet the busy Mansfield Road. Shops, cafes and inns offer a distraction from traffic noise through Sherwood and here buses could provide an opt out.
When the shops fade back to residential we leave the main road through an area of grand houses some with coach houses now converted to bijou homes. Pirates Park was once the site of Carrington Lido, one of many open air swimming pools in and around Nottingham.
Our route crosses Mansfield Road at traffic lights and takes a short climb up Magdala Road to reach more quiet roads and a footpath link to Chestnut Grove before arriving at St Andrew's church.
Another light controlled road crossing leads to North Sherwood Street for an approach into the city passing the expanding Nottingham Trent University and the tall tower of the Newton Building that older residents will still call The Poly.

22 Nov 2023I accept Norfolk Place is not the best route but I added it because having worked at the Post Office it was the staff entrance so I knew it well back then. It was also, believe it or not, the delivery point to Griffin and Spalding although I see even then it was Debenhams. (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin_%26_Spalding) British Railways made regular deliveries using their three wheel Scammell tractor and trailer units which were able to do a 'U' turn at the bottom of this very narrow road.
