Help connect Nottingham

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Nottingham’s Slow Ways.

Less picturesque that it's NotWes1 couterpart, but seemingly a more direct route back into the City. I would suggest that the route is a well walked one by sports fans who have attended games at Forest or the Cricket. The route is a well established pathway, but runs in part next to buys roads....

As avid sports fans it was also good to catch a glimpse of the football grounds (Meadow Lane - Notts County and The Forest Ground - Nottingham Forest) as well as the cricket ground (Trent Bridge)...

Places I had never visited before were: the alleyway to Norfolk Place, the route north of Forest Road down into Mapperley Park (the short path down from Chestnut Grove to St Andrews Road is a little steep but has a handrail), the street route from Woodthorpe Grange Park northwards and Arnot Hill Park....

Following the trams to Gladstone Street the plot misses a patch of green to cut through to Shipstone Street alongside the decorative former brewery. The walk along Lincoln street brought back school day memories then onto another new section of Leen side walk which is a vast improvement on the twists, turns and barriers of the original track. The path continues with the river on the right, the final approach into Bulwell stays on the west bank but a notice warns that the plotted route can be closed. Crossing the Bulwell by-pass road the route continues along what was a railway line hence the huge bridge to pass under the noisy motorway....

After crossing Newdigate Street a surfaced path takes us past houses to Main Road. Here we would normally cross and continue to follow the old railway, but as noted in my introduction, a path closure forced me right onto Main Road and eventually left up New Farm Lane to rejoin the route (I did go and have a look at the blocked section, which is protected by high fences so I wasn't tempted to try and force a way through, and I also discovered the hard way that there is no short cut to the main road using Bishopdale Road and Reid Gardens). Our route through the Arboretum has a few ups and downs (there is an alternative path higher up, but yesterday this was fenced off for a music event), and the left turn uphill above the flower garden and the lake seems surprising, but it takes us past the Chinese Bell Tower then through the tunnel under Addison Street, and past more trees to emerge on North Sherwood Street, which we follow down into the city via Trinity Square and King Street to the Left Lion meeting point by the Council House in the Old Market Square....

The straight line continues onto Radford Road, and we cross the ring road then head left over the railway and the Leen at Church Street. A path alongside and on the south side of the tram lines takes us under Cinderhill Road and out to the Phoenix Park tram terminus, where we head left, crossing the A610 at a pelican crossing then turn right along the old main road....

Quiet tree lined roads lead eventually to the edge of Woodthorpe Park but there is no entrance so we have to follow the perimeter to meet the busy Mansfield Road. Our route crosses Mansfield Road at traffic lights and takes a short climb up Magdala Road to reach more quiet roads and a footpath link to Chestnut Grove before arriving at St Andrew's church....

There are facilities (shops & cafes) at Nottingham town centre, Netherfield town centre (near to Carlton railway station) and also at the retail park containing Smyths, Costa, Lidl which is on the south side of the ramped bridge over the active railway along Sneinton Greenway. The route follows pavements and pedestrian crossings through Nottingham town centre. This is another linear path that follows the active train line towards Carlton station, with access points at either end....

Mostly very pleasant, though there are a couple of places where the GPX file might be inadequate for a newcomer to the area (using the right of way line through the park in Ilkeston rather than the more direct surfaced path, the straight line past Wollaton Hall which is not entirely possible and the route down from Gregory Street to the canal, which is on the west side of the bridge). Follow Park Crescent past the cemetery to the right turn into Millfield Road, where we take the alleyway going straight on, and stay on the alleyway where it crosses Heathfield Avenue, which we rejoin using Winchester Crescent. Having crossed the canal we turn right, taking the left fork and a signposted left turn which leads us to the railway bridge, where you can either use the steps or the longer cycle ramps on both sides. As noted in my introduction, the GPX file is a little misleading - it is correct as far as the museum, where we continue on a narrower path up steps, which turn left just below the hall to emerge on a surfaced road - we follow this around the bend in front of the Hall and take the first surfaced track right, ignoring the path that heads into the walled garden. Cross Derby Road on a pelican crossing and (unless a visit to the Rose and Crown is needed) follow Hillside, continuing on a surfaced riverside path, which crosses to the east bank of the Leen on Leen Gate and emerging on Abbey Street opposite the Johnson Arms, crossing Abbey Street on another pelican crossing and turning left....

At Canning Circus we continue half right onto Alfreton Road, which we follow for some distance, past Gregory and Radford Boulevards and over the railway bridge to the junction with Aspley Lane, where we turn left along a wide tree-lined road. A good direct functional route, suitable for all as long as the lifts either side of the tram bridge at the QMC are working (I used the steps as I am a purist when it comes to walks, and would consider using a lift to be unfair assistance). I had never walked through The Park and enjoyed that section. I did wonder why the walk through the university doesn't take in the lakeside path - as far as I remember the one on the south side has no steps....

Hugh Hudson

I don't really see the point of going via St Ann's, and although this route skirts the famous Hungerhill Gardens allotments, it doesn't allow views into them - going via Sherwood would allow a little more green space in the Forest and the Arboretum to be included, though I am not sure that is sufficient justification for a new alternative route....

Hugh Hudson

Walk this route

This is quite an enjoyable walk, and for fitter walkers the route through Colwick Woods is by far the best way to do the middle part of it, but the path quality varies quite a lot - there are no serious obstacles or stiles but it does involve a number of ups and downs, and plenty of steps....

There is a lift to get you onto the Friendship Bridge, but it was out of order on the day I walked the route, so it cannot be relied if you find walking up stairs a problem. The road into the Park is permissive, although it has been there for a long time. The route is undulating, although not by a great amount (a short 17% stretch at one point, 3 -4% on average)....

As an alternative (quieter roads) at the Beeston side, you can walk down Dovecote Lane (west of the recommended route) where a (stepped) footbridge eventually takes you over the railway line, and then continue down Trent Road, to then meet the canal (either head east on Canal Side to the cobbled bridge) or west to cross the canal, then east along the raised embankment to re-join at the cobbled bridge....
