05 Mar 2024Walked Newlyn to Penzance. On paper this looked a good flat coastal route, but I found it rather dull compared with Newpen One (which I awarded 5 stars), and the last half mile along Quay Road, between the swimming pool and the end point at the station, was not great - lots of traffic, including some heavy port traffic, and disappearing pavements.
Leaving Newlyn the route is the same as Newpen One as far as Wherrytown. This is the best part of the coastal walk between the towns I think. Then the routes diverge and this one continues along the sea wall. There are some steps, but these can be bypassed by going along a ramp by the skateboard park.
The promenade here is wide and bare, I found it rather dull, and it would have no shade in hot weather. Could do with some trees. There are of course lovely views across the bay to St Michael’s Mount, and south to Lizard.
The landmark lido Jubilee Pool was closed for winter, but good to have a close look.
After that its the main road past the harbour to the railway station. Most of my downmarking for this route is from not enjoying the road walk in the last section.
The one flight of steps is avoidable; however, a feature of Cornish towns seems to be disappearing pavements, and often there are no dropped kerbs.
A very serviceable route, but for me the more inland route Newpen One through Penzance town was more interesting and much quieter.

28 Dec 2023A flat easy route along the seafront following the South West coast path from Newlyn to Penzance. It starts from the centre of Newlyn with its pubs, cafes and shops before joining the seafront near the excellent Newlyn Art Gallery. It then continues along the seafront, with excellent views of Mount's Bay, until reaching Penzance Lido, and then follows the roadside pavements through Penzance harbour passing pubs, restaurants and cafes until arriving at Penzance train station.
