Strider
15 Jul 2022I walked from Cheshunt to Newgate Street.
On leaving Cheshunt Town Center it is suburban street walking for a while. Andrew's Lane starts as a residential road then becomes a path before ducking under a subway and becoming a rural road. The road is narrow, with no pavements or verges in places. On reaching a road junction a footpath takes you through overgrown grassland, thistles, nettles, and grass chin high (150cm), the ground is uneven and hard to see under the grass, the signposts help. after a rickety stile there's a short hop across a golf course to another narrow rural road with no verge. Across fields with horses then a narrow footpath to a road which leads to Darnicle Hill, yet another road without provision for pedestrians, it is wider than the previous two roads but the traffic is faster. I agree with the previous reviewer, I would feel quite uncomfortable to walk this without bright daylight and some hiviz clothing. This walk is not for a dull day or darkness.
Newgate Street is a small village with a Pub and infrequent buses, a good place to walk through.
The highlight was CC's Cake and Bake stall, really good grub. I got chatting to the women there and explained slow ways and route reviewing. She said, "so you get hit by lorries so others don't have to, that's very good of you"
Caution is needed for this walk, take hiviz. I feel that with lovely countryside visible all around there must be a better route, but with 'Private, Keep Out' notices everywhere perhaps a direct route is not possible.

29 Apr 2021Other than small segments this is not an enjoyable walk. It simply gets you from A to B mainly on roads. The road section from Darnicle Hill to Newgate Street Village in my view should not be recommended. Over the past 30 years I cannot remember the last time I saw a pedestrian here. There is no footway on what is a fairly busy unlit road, national speed limit, and not enough room for cars to pass both ways if there is a pedestrian.
