Description
A fairly easy walk from Newport rail station to Caldicot town centre, taking in the settlements of Llanwern, Bishton, Llandevenny, Magor, Undy and Rogiet. Apart from the first section through suburban districts of Newport, most of the route is off-road and rural, with no significant ascents. Refreshment / toilet stops are available in Llanwern (pub), Magor (cafe, shops & pub) and Rogiet (petrol station / shop). At Rogiet, the route goes right past Severn Tunnel Junction rail station

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Sep 2021I’ve uploaded an improved version of this walk - see Newcal 5. I experienced a couple of access problems with Newcal 4:
1) Coming from Newport, the path into Llanwern was blocked by a construction site. Access may be reinstated when the new housing is finished, but in Sep 2021 the route was impassable.
2) The footpath east of Bishton was totally overgrown (despite being clearly signposted from the village). It didn’t look particularly promising from the other end either (where it joins the road).

05 Oct 2021Hi MaddyT,
Thanks for the review; and for uploading Newcal 5.
For info, I created Newcal 4 - from the original Newcal 1 (which I had removed, because it contained a section of dangerous road walking between Undy and Rogiet). In Newcal 4 I re-routed it to use NCN4 and Rogiet village instead.
Regarding your observations:
The blockage at Llanwern: yes, it was a problem when I walked that section a few months ago (as part of a circular walk), though I managed to detour. I'm sure the path will be reinstated/rerouted in due course.
The issue east of Bishton: I haven't attempted that section yet on foot, but I will go and have a look and report to Newport CC as needed.
Thanks again.
Phil
