Description

This route addresses some reviewer concerns about the original route. NewBur 1 is admirably direct, but some walkers may prefer a little more distance and a little
less road walking.

The majority of the walk is along footpaths, bridleways and some short sections on small roads.
There are a few small villages on the route: Ashley, Dalham and Horringer. Between them you can stop to eat, drink, shop for food or stay overnight. Or maybe you'll have a cream tea at the NT café in Ickworth Park.

Leaving Newmarket there is a fairly long bit of road walking. This seems to be unavoidable whichever direction you take. This road, towards Moulton, appears to have a very wide, very flat and seemingly reliably mown verge, almost like a grassy footpath. At least that's what you can see on Google Street View.

Near Horringer the route goes through the National Trust Ickworth Estate. It may appear as if you need to pay an entry fee, but I think that this only applies if you want to see the house and gardens, and maybe to park your car. There's a large area of the estate where there's a right to roam because it is Open Access Land. You can see it as a yellow overlay on Ordnance Survey maps. There also public footpaths in the estate. This route doesn't roam free though, you just use some of NT's tracks. Hopefully you won't feel pressured to buy a ticket at the booth, but they should let you through if you tell them you are visiting the "Open Access Land" as designated under the Countryside and Rights Of Way Act 2000 ;-).

I'd prefer to have tested the route and ironed out any niggles before uploading it but my visit to the area fell through. I did get some good advice from a local Slow Ways user, and hopefully the route will work out

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
