Description
This is mostly the same as NEWATH one, but reflects our experiences while pioneering it. The route either side of Ansley has been shortened - firstly to use the shorter path between the golf course and the road, and then to stay on the pavement to the junction near Church End rather than using the indirect and little used field path. I have also attempted to show the most walkable line through Atherstone golf course and reflect what the paths do on the ground, but since this is access land, more direct lines may be possible when there is no golf in progress

18 Sep 2023Reliable, varied, direct and enjoyable route. Only required interpretation crossing a couple of golf courses where they haven't marked the right of way. Mainly offroad, but where it isn't there is mostly pavement or it's along a quiet lane. Steps and stiles so not great for wheels.

16 Sep 2023Walked from Atherstone to New Arley. A good direct route, mostly on field paths and pavements. It does cross two golf courses, and uses a few field paths that may not always be well cut.
From Atherstone, we follow streets down to the canal, and walk east along the canal to the second bridge, where we turn right into what is both an area of access land and a golf course. We walked it early in the morning before the golfers were out, so could make our way up the hill fairly easily but we found markers along the left hand edge of the course, so I plotted the route to use that path. A short farm track takes us to Monks Park Lane (no verge, so take care on this short road section). Another footpath leads us back over the golf course and continues through fields to Barley Close Lane, where we turn right, then left on Ridge Lane which has a pavement.
Another field path takes us to Nuneaton Road (at least one of the fields had no clear path line), and from here we can follow pavements all the way into Ansley. Our path goes through an alleyway just before the pub, then goes left between fields and gardens, then right along a field edge into another golf course. The line across this golf course is not clearly marked, so we attempted to stick to the definitive path line - there may be easier options. Once the stream at the bottom end of the course is reached we are back on a good path, which leads easily over the Leicester to Birmingham railway to the quiet lane that leads us up into New Arley, where the meeting point bench is in the middle of an unnecessary roundabout. There is a pub here.
