Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

19 Mar 2024This route follows St. Swithun's Way (Winchester to Farnham, where it joins the Pilgrim's Way to Canterbury). Bus 64 (half-hourly) joins the two ends. The B3047 road from New Alresford to Bishops Sutton has a footpath but it changes sides twice. Crossing the busy A31 is done at a roundabout. The next 1.5 km is on narrow country lanes. Ropley village is pleasant, the church was rebuilt in 2022 following a fire in 2014. The route passes a coffee shop at Garthowen Garden Centre in Four Marks. Near Chawton the route uses a disused railway line before crossing the A32 into the village. Opposite Jane Austen's house is a tea room. The path goes in a subway under the A31 into Alton (shops and cafes). Pleasant countryside throughout and no really steep hills.

14 Nov 2022I walked this route from Alresford to Alton on Monday 14th November 2022 using GPS.
A varied route; narrow paths, stony rutted tracks, roads with paths, lanes with no paths, a disused railway line, villages, woods, fields, farmland, etc. There are some pleasant views but nothing outstanding. The route rises gently from Alresford to Four Marks and descends a bit quicker down to Alton.
The route was easy to follow except, just before Ropley, St Swithun's Way where it leaves Tegg Down Road is not passable or is wrongly placed on the map. The path is a few metres further along Tegg Down Road and is shown on OS maps.
There is a small shop and post office along the route at Ropley and a garden centre at Four Marks with a cafe. The route takes you through Chawton which has a tearoom and Jane Austen's house.
From the Slow Ways methodology:
1. The route is safe, some muddy places.
2. The route respects local codes and laws.
3. The route was easily passable but with styles, gates, narrow tracks and the A31 & A32 to negotiate.
4. The route is direct.
5. The route is about 35% road, some paved, some not.
6. There are resting places along the way.
7. Alton has a train station and busses. Alresford has a bus service with good connections to Alton.
8. The route was easy to navigate.
9. Having convenient food and drink vendors along the way was good. There might be a more scenic rural route on the other side of the A31.
10. All the paths are well established.
