Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

07 Aug 2024Two nice little seaside places joined by a very fine coastal path. Plenty of opportunities for marine mammal spotting and not as uppie downie as Cornwall. Route finding pretty straightforward done south to north and the cliff side walks aren't at all scary.

07 Aug 2024A very enjoyable, mostly straightforward route between two attractive little port towns, all on the Wales Coast path. There is a lovely section along the beach at the Newquay end which doesn't look.to be walkable at high tide and there is an alternative coast path route available inland along the road. Otherwise not much to add to the previous review. There are regular.buses along this bit of coast which makes it an easy day out and a bar at Pont y Gilfach along the way. The diversion of the coast path at Aberaeron is still in place while enormous piles of rocks are being shifted around by huge diggers to protect the coast. On the walk down into town it is easy to see why it is vulnerable to sea level rise and heftier storms.

18 Mar 2024 (edited 22 Mar 2024)Walked from Aberaeron to New Quay. Most of this walk is excellent, scenic and very easy to follow, but there are steep ups and downs, steps and a few rougher places and muddy sections, so it is definitely not suitable for wheels. Note that there is currently a well signposted diversion on the coast path on the west side of Aberaeron due to coastal defence improvements - the diversion uses Wellington Gardens and a new paved path that skirts the edge of the county council car park. I don't think an alternative is needed here.
I have to admit that because I didn't want to look pedantic to the friends I was walking with, I missed out some very short sections at both ends - we started in the car park west of the Aeron and got the Traws Cymru bus back from New Quay (the bus to Aberystwyth goes along Hill Street and Park Street and has to miss the meeting point because of the one way system).
The current signposted coast path diversion in Aberaeron is to follow Vulcan Place, Wellington Street and Wellington Gardens past the primary school, then go straight on on the paved path (picture 1) that skirts the car park of the council offices then cross the field beyond the builders' fences.
From here navigation is mostly very straightforward, as the coast path is popular and mostly well marked. It has plenty of little ups and downs, some of them steep and involving steps, and some slightly muddy sections. In places the path on the ground deviates a little from the definitive right of way line. It is possible to go slightly wrong at Llwynon, where the first drive could be mistaken for the road, and the metal staircase that is used to leave the beach lacks a coast path marker. We did the beach section fairly close to high tide and were always well above the water. The path up to Brongwyn Lane is twistier than the GPX line, and there is one point where it is necessary to turn right and go up a few steps.
