Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Upon leaving Long Stratton there is a nervous stretch of road to be extra careful on.

Beyond this we encountered a lovely walk with woodlands and horses as we passed through the Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

The ongoing National Grid works are likely to cause some diversions to this route until complete. Please see Thom's review for more detail on this.

Leaving the little village of Long Stratton, we wandered in field paths as well as woodland areas. As parts of the route have not been maintained, it is recommended to look into former reviewer Thom Brisco’s suggestions for adjustments.

Setting out from Long Stratton, the walk begins with an awkward 200 m stretch of Swan Lane that is unaccompanied by a footpath. Walkers must be very careful in accessing a cross-field footpath that begins on a sharp bend of this road. As a previous reviewer writes, we then found ourselves crossing a couple of fields where the route has not been maintained in any visible form by the farmer however, the Slow Ways route can be trusted. With the landscape gently rolling, we enjoyed long views across farmland peppered with deciduous trees and hedgerows.

Leaving Tharston we encountered field path closures caused by ongoing works to the overhead national grid power lines. Signage indicated that these works would cause closures up until 31.05.25. We were forced to take Parkes Lane through Low Tharston to rejoin the Slow Ways route.

Approaching Flordon, we enjoyed stretches of footpath alongside woodland before meeting friendly horses at the Redwings Horse Sanctuary. Reaching Mulbarton we were impressed by the large triangular common and we paused for a beer at The World Ends pub which seemed a good spot.

This route is ok, but let down by the large proportion of footpath across fields and along roads.
Leaving Long Stratton is not the best as it requires walking along the fairly busy Swan Lane and crossing to join the footpath on a bend. The off road cut through to Picton Road is nice and the walk down Picton Rad is fine. The next off road segment is good until it requires a cut across a ploughed field to Pump Road for which the path has not been properly maintain by the farmer. There is a walk along the road to Tharston. The route out of Tharston is again not very good with a long stretch across the middle of large field, which where ploughed and not marked by the farmer with no clear marking of where to exit and not easy to walk on. The route eventual leads to a short walk along the B1527 (not ideal and slightly unsafe). However the route does improve significantly from here with a lovely footpath across a stream and into Redwings Horse Sanctuary. This leads to Flordon and the remainder of the walk is mostly along Long Lane. While this is a road, it is not much used, the verge offers easy walking and the views are good. Mulbarton is good place to start or stop, it is lovely village with a great common and has a Co-op shop and pub for food and drink. Will try to work out and suggest an alternate route.
