Lancaster Ramblers

09 Oct 2021 Autumn

This pleasant walk combines the promenade, the access land near Hest Bank and the canal towpath from Hest Bank to Carnforth. The first 2 miles are on the paved Morecambe promenade with views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland fells. The coast is followed through the café car park (gate closed out of café hours but path at the side may be taken). This leads onto the Access land of the beach which can be stony and subject to tides. An alternative is to follow the pavement on the main road into the village of Hest Bank and take a road on the right to the canal towpath (3 alternatives). If the beach path is followed, the route crosses the railway (level crossing gates or footbridge) and the road opposite leads directly to the canal towpath. There are cafes and bus stops in Hest Bank. The towpath is followed north all the way to Carnforth, crossing to the road at the Canal Turn pub. It is then a short way on the road to the finish. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen both on the sand and mudflats of the Bay and from along the towpath.

Important note: A small part of this route, from where it leaves the A5105 at the end of the promenade until moving inland to the canal at Hest Bank, is below the tide’s high water mark, so you need to check the tides. It is normally walkable, but if the tide is very high, or soon due to be very high, you can walk along the pavement of the main road for about three quarters of a mile.
The first mile and a half of the route is along a well-surfaced, wide and popular promenade. The next (tidal) section to Hest Bank is along the shore, with easy paths sometimes, but at times it is necessary to walk on the beach or the sea cobbles, some of which have seaweed on them. At Hest Bank there is a beach café by the level crossing, and pub and shops after crossing the railway. There is also the Hest Bank Hotel, across the canal, for refreshments and toilets. The bulk of the rest of the route follows the Lancaster Canal and is very pleasant, suburban, and easy. The towpath is generally degraded tarmac or gravel. The centre of Carnforth is not far along the roads, after leaving the canal at the Canal Turn pub.
The coast has superb views and the canal is also very pleasant and easy going. Both have plenty of wildlife and interest.
