Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Morecambe’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
As has been covered in previous reviews, this version of the Morlan SlowWay largely follows the same route as Morlan One, except for a small diversion around Lancaster in order to avoid steps and rougher terrain. That said, there are some notable gradients to tackle, and when using the level crossing on the approach to Morecambe, I found some of the gates rather stiff to open, which could potentially cause issues for some users. Besides these issues, this route is ideal for all kinds of wheels....

As has been mentioned in earlier reviews, the eastern portion of this walk requires some steep gradients and the use of steps, so if wheeling, Morlan Two would be the preferable option....

This walk combines the promenade, the access land near Hest Bank and the coastline paths to enter Carnforth from the River Keer. From there, the coastal path is followed past the Praying Shell sculpture and affording excellent views of Grange-over-Sands and Lakeland, to the start of the marsh....

Walk this routeThis pleasant walk combines the promenade, the access land near Hest Bank and the coastline to the caravan park at Bolton-le-Sands but omits the poor stretch of path across the marsh....

Its, good but be aware it is a well used cycle route!...

This pleasant walk combines the promenade, the access land near Hest Bank and the canal towpath from Hest Bank to Carnforth. An alternative is to follow the pavement on the main road into the village of Hest Bank and take a road on the right to the canal towpath (3 alternatives)....
Lancaster Ramblers
Pavement and pedestrianised promenade all the way, suitable for all abilities (one steepish slope of ~ 100m) and wheelchairs...
kubicki
Pleasant green corridor linking Morecambe and the coast to Lancaster City centre. Shared, tarmac path used by pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users...

The next section to Hest Bank (where there is a beach café by the level crossing, and pub and shops a bit further inland), and on to Red Bank, is along the shore, with easy paths sometimes, but at times it is necessary to walk on the beach or the sea cobbles, some of which have seaweed on them. At Red Bank the path goes up the field and back down through the corner of the caravan/campsite. There is a café at Red Bank which is currently (summer) open 6 days a week....

Important note: A small part of this route, from where it leaves the A5105 at the end of the promenade until moving inland to the canal at Hest Bank, is below the tide’s high water mark, so you need to check the tides. There is also the Hest Bank Hotel, across the canal, for refreshments and toilets....

It is flat except for 1 slope down (heading north) with views across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District for all of the route. Regular information plaques give added interest and there are plenty of seats from which to admire the view. The additional features of St Peters Church and St Patricks chapel (ruin) on Chapel Hill are present via a short detour at Heysham....

A substantial part of this route is along tidal marshes, so you would need to check the tides. The next section to Hest Bank (where there is a beach café by the level crossing, and pub and shops a bit further inland), and on to Red Bank, is along the shore, with easy paths sometimes, but at times it is necessary to walk on the beach or the sea cobbles, some of which have seaweed on them. The route goes inland at Marsh House Farm....

Walk this routeThe route is well signposted on the old railway line and the houses and light industry are generally well shielded from the path by trees. If walking in a small group, the presence of large numbers of cyclists plus electric scooters and mobility scooters means that one needs to stay alert and keep to the walker’s side of the path (right). The route is hard surfaced throughout flat except for the short final section to Lancaster railway station....
Lancaster Ramblers
It incorporates a riverside walk and for much of the distance it follows a path and cycleway utilising a former railway line between Lancaster and Morecambe. Gates at a level crossing across the existing railway line near Morecambe (photo provided) should not pose a problem for most users. Crossing the existing railway line via a level crossing near Morecambe obviously requires particular care (photo provided)....
Peregrinating Paul
A gentle perambulation along the flat, smooth seafront (so suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs) enjoying the panoramic views across Morecambe Bay. And you have the added bonus of being distracted by distance markers and information plaques embedded in the surface....

Apart from a short walk along a residential road at the Heysham end, this walk entirely follows the excellent and popular promenade, with stunning views across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District (if the weather is clear). This must be one of the best Slow Ways to do with children – it is short and has at least three play areas, plus beaches, cafés, and ice cream shops! There is also a wealth of birdlife....

This route makes full use of the Lancaster and Morecambe Greenway, a tarmacked, well-lit, popular off-road route, created from a former railway line. From the Eric Morecambe statue on Morecambe Prom, follow the Prom, with its lovely view, then turn onto Northumberland Street and head for the railway station and small bus station. A short way along the Greenway, you must carefully cross the single-track railway, on a pedestrian level crossing with gates at either side....

This route makes full use of the Lancaster and Morecambe Greenway, a tarmacked, well-lit, popular off-road route, created from a former railway line. The route crosses the river on the Millennium Bridge. There is a sharp turn onto a short bit of road which crosses under a dark railway bridge....

Initially the walk is down on the grassy shore, then as you reach the outskirts of Morecambe you will walk on a well designed pedestrianised promenade which is very popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and pram pushers. The views are very much dependent on the weather but are usually stunning....
