03 Aug 2022Review of SlowWays Route Milstr one (Milngavie to Strathblane)
I walked this route on a rainy morning in August 2022. The first two thirds of the route are very straightforward with early sections through residential streets and the Milngavie reservoirs to the north of the town. The route then enters and cuts across Mugdock Country Park before following a track through an area of farmland. It was at this point that I ran into difficulties as the track led to a field occupied by a large number of Highland Cattle and their calves. The animals were clearly agitated by my approach and I felt it would not have been safe or sensible to enter the field. There was no obvious alternative route through this section so I was forced to turn back. I attempted to detour through another part of the farmland where I knew a popular walker’s path existed, but I found the gate at the beginning of the path (at NS547780) chained up (with a sign warning of cows with calves). A further (longer) detour beyond the farmland allowed me to pick up a forestry track which eventually linked up with the continuation of the mapped route just beyond the original cattle field. The remainder of the route downhill into Strathblane was unremarkable. This is a fairly straightforward route (although a bit muddy in places after a night of heavy rain) but the cattle field presents an insurmountable barrier to access and I am therefore unable to recommend it. I intend to submit an alternative route.

19 Aug 2021This route goes through a field which often contains cows, bulls and calves. It is difficult to navigate through the field and I have lost the path on numerous occasions. This is not the route I would take to Milngavie.
