Description
This is a route designed to be more resilient in winter flood conditions. I discovered while trying to follow MEXCON two that Ferry Boat Lane floods deeply south of the railway bridge, and this is the route I improvised as an alternative. All of the road sections have pavements. There are a few steps, but this is also true of the earlier routes

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Jan 2024 (edited 09 Jan 2024)Walked from Mexborough to Conisbrough. Note that I was planning to walk MEXCON two but was thwarted by flood water, and I only changed what was necessary to find the shortest possible alternative that works and is safe. This route does include a pleasant section of canal walking, and all of the road sections have pavements.
From the Mexborough meeting point, we head east along Bank Street, continuing along Greens Way which is best crossed by the roundabout (no lights but there is a central refuge). We double back a short distance and follow the steps down to Market Street, where we turn sharp left, passing the church then go down Ferry Boat Lane and using the impressive new footbridge over the canal.
We follow the well surfaced towpath out to Doncaster Road, alongside a wide canal basin. Beyond the bridge a path with a few steps takes us back up to Doncaster Road, which is easiest to cross just beyond the old Doncaster Road (signposted Dearne Valley Leisure Centre). We follow the right hand pavement over the first roundabout then turn right at the second up Hill Top Road. Just before the pavement end at the 40 mph signs, we turn left into the housing estate, which is full of surfaced paths which are not shown on OpenStreetMap. Keep heading uphill and you will emerge on Harrogate Drive, where we go left to the T junction, cross and turn right then take the good surfaced path up the hill. There is a stone/concrete picnic table here which has good views over the Don Valley.
Just beyond the table we rejoin MexCon two and turn left along another surfaced path. The shortest path up to Peake Avenue has a few steps. The rest of the route goes through residential streets and small green spaces, then down Old Road to the Conisbrough meeting point.
