Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Conisbrough’s Slow Ways.

As routes go this is easy to follow although a lot of the route is along a main road once you come off the river path. After the main road you’re walking through a couple of housing estates for a while, still no issues following the route and easy to navigate....

Once over the other side we start a long use of the bonded surface cycle track but stay alongside the viaduct, the other path offers bikes a better gradient via a longer loop. Passing under the busy A1 road bridge the cycle route turns left along a disused rail route. An alternative direct route would be along the cycle track but I rather enjoyed the contrasting openness of the riverside as it made a gentle curve. An impressive bridge takes a dead end right of way over a branch of the river and would offer a more direct route but we stay on the west bank as the open countryside becomes the back of the hospital and industry....

Leaving Doncaster train station is probably the most confusing part, but it is straight forward after that....

The pavement disappears once we leave the houses, but apart from two very short sections (one just beyond the 40 limit sign and one near the junction with Sheffield Road) there is a walkable verge on the south side, and the road was not too busy on a weekday morning....

As the two routes are linked by a nice pub in Hooton Roberts (The Earl of Strafford), it’s easy enough to walk from Rotherham to Conisborough in a day....

It was a pity it was such a busy road because there were splendid rural views all around....

Walk this routeWe follow the right hand pavement over the first roundabout then turn right at the second up Hill Top Road. Keep heading uphill and you will emerge on Harrogate Drive, where we go left to the T junction, cross and turn right then take the good surfaced path up the hill....

Walk this routeThe flagging mechanism doesn't have a value for no fault non-completion, and this means there is no fair solution that doesn't have unwanted consequences (I would have liked a way of reviewing that doesn't count in the route stats at all, i.e. a genuine 0 rather than being forced to choose +1 or -1)....

It then passes through some pretty woodland leading to the ex-colliery town of New Edlington. Overall a good start and a good finish, but less interesting in the middle....

In summary a good section at the start and a lovely village at the end, but less interesting in the middle....

On leaving Denaby Nature Reserve we had a short road walk, which had a pavement except over the River Dearne bridge. From here we emerged onto another muddy ploughed field crossing, with no visible footpath at the time, but it improved after a bit. This was mostly a good walk, with only short road sections....

On one section around the M18/A1(M) junction you have to walk along the road which passes under the motorway bridge, there is always a verge to use on the side and it was a quiet road at the time of passing though but the occasional car whistled past....

A very mixed route, cycle tracks through post industrial sites, field paths and a busy road. From Conisbrough the route descends along a surfaced but at times steep path into the valley of the River Don where we passed the railway station. Cyclists are provided with a long gentle slope but we took a steep climb to the Trans Pennine Trail which follows an old rail route alongside a large colliery spoil heap of Cadeby Main Colliery now greened over. The woodland walk was good with wide paths but the majority of visitors don't use the path to Marr as this again was unmarked across the ploughed field although we did have a yellow topped post, provided by Doncaster Rambers, to head for....

The south end is fine and very pleasant, but I can't go higher than three stars because there are a couple of places where road walking on fairly busy roads is needed, both unavoidable, and one field path where we had to cross a waterlogged ploughed field. Having arrived in Conisbrough by train, I investigated the alternative path up to the town that slants through the wood from the top of Windsor Road - this is a good surfaced path but there are a couple of steps and some slippery stones, so when we started out group walk I was happy to go with Mary's plan. We turn right along the pavement (which is separated from the road by a wall in places), then cross with care and head up Hangmanstone Lane....

The bridge over the river is of a temporary design from the last war while the third bridge over the New Cut must have been provided as part of the upgrading of the canal in the 1980s. No need to wonder "The Greens Way flyover bridge over the A6023 in Mexborough has been demolished, following advice from bridge engineers, who issued safety guidance due to the structure's continued deteriorating condition."...

River work is being done currently at Marsh Gate prison however you can still stay Riverside from Newton Farm to the works fencing and then follow the River Don to the cement works at Marsh Gate. From Connisborough Viaduct walking from Doncon you can stay on TP2 all the way to Liverpool!!...
The stretch adjacent to the Dolomite Quarry near Warmsworth is particularly bad as the track is shared with quarry traffic and also involves passing through 2 narrow gates, see photo. There is a short section of road up the hill from Sprotbrough Flash and then the route passes through Hexthorpe Flats park and the streets of Hexthorpe....
