04 Jan 2024 (edited 09 Jan 2024)I atarted this route from Mexborough, but was forced to abandon it because Ferry Boat Lane south of the railway bridge was under deep looking water after the recent storms (see picture 7 - the bin gives an idea of the depth of the water). Having retreated back over the Don, I followed the canal path to Doncaster Road and found a way up through the housing estate at Denaby Main which allowed me to rejoin this route north east of Hill Top Road. I have submitted that as a wet weather variant (MEXCON three).
I did initially flag this review as don't know because I wasn't able to complete it (and in my view the system should NOT treat that as equivalent to a No), but it is almost certainly fine in more normal conditions, and I trust Ken's judgment on that, so I have decided to change it to a Yes. The flagging mechanism doesn't have a value for no fault non-completion, and this means there is no fair solution that doesn't have unwanted consequences (I would have liked a way of reviewing that doesn't count in the route stats at all, i.e. a genuine 0 rather than being forced to choose +1 or -1).

17 Sep 2023I walked from Conisbrough along residential streets and a short section of green park before arriving at North Cliff Hill where there are many paths but the plot should guide you through. Not the best of views but certainly a far reaching one across the valley of the River Don.
After crossing a road the path is between open ploughed fields and woodland to Old Denaby whereI found no services. Ferry Boat Lane has some expensive looking houses and the road name offers a clue to our destination. We first cross the railway by a bridge looking more like a theme park ride with a long ramp suitable for wheels although others parts of the route are less obliging. The bridge over the river is of a temporary design from the last war while the third bridge over the New Cut must have been provided as part of the upgrading of the canal in the 1980s.
The approach to Mexborough passes the church and for the time being offers a view of two towers, church and mill. The final section is not the best with a long flight of steps and then a busy road crossing but this is the route used by the failed Mexcon. I wonder what happened to the missing flyover of the bypass? It was there until 2021 and would have offered a safer route. No need to wonder "The Greens Way flyover bridge over the A6023 in Mexborough has been demolished, following advice from bridge engineers, who issued safety guidance due to the structure's continued deteriorating condition.".

04 Jan 2024During these times of exceptional heavy rain many roads as well as Slow Ways will be flooded and impassible. While it's worth putting in a note that this route may flood it appears to me to be inappropriate to flag it which stays there for all time come rain or shine.

05 Jan 2024Sorry Ken - I hope to go back and retry it in better conditions, and if I manage that I will remove the flag. In my view a don't know flag should not be viewed as wholly negative - in this case it just means that I couldn't complete the route on the day, and because there was a fair chunk of the route I couldn't/didn't do I felt unable to give it an unconditional Yes.

05 Jan 2024I have also raised a question in the forum, as I think the flagging system needs tweaking.

05 Jan 2024We are being invited to return to routes we may have flagged and remove it if appropriate. In my view a flag should only be put in place if the issue is permanent or very long term. I'll take a look at the forum.
Hugh Hudson
06 Jan 2024OK, I have now removed the flag (not without a degree or reluctance).
