Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Paul Chilcott

16 Aug 2024 Summer

August 2024. Direction: Treharris to Merthyr Tydfil.

An excellent walk predominantly in the Taff Valley, using the Taff Trail and Trevithick Trail most of the way. It didn`t start well, as the "zig-zag path leading down from Treharris to Quakers Yard is temporarily closed until October / November 2024 for maintenance work, so a deviation was needed, down the A4050 Cardiff Road and along Mill Street. I had previously walked this section as part of Moutre1 walk to Mountain Ash with no problems.

The remainder of the walk went without hitch. Both trails are cycle paths and are well signed (the Taff Trail is NCN route 8 and the Trevithick Trail NCN route 477). Between Quakers Yard and Merthyr, most of the trail is tarmac (Photo 2), although there is a section between Quakers Yard and Merthyr Vale that is a stony track, but it has been well bedded in (Photo 6).

The Trevithick Trail and the Taff Trail overlap between Quakers Yard and Pontygwaith Farm, but then go their separate ways - watch for the sign (Photo 5). An alternative route could be to just follow the Taff Trail all the way to Merthyr, but it runs on the other side of the river (crossing at Pontygwaith Bridge) and is next to the noisy A470 for a couple of miles up to Aberfan, which in my opinion is not as good, although both are equally direct.
