Leaving Merthyr and walking up a hillside withn a clear path makes this a far more pleasant walk than other slow ways routes in the area that take you over the top of the hills. Sadly there are access issues in woods on the Llwydcoed side and an alternative route will need to be created....

Pleasant walking through Rhymney becomes a stroll through farmland and then through barren moorlike hillside before merging onto the roadside and following past opencast coal mining into Merthyr. Useable but while on hillside the path is very difficult to follow directly....

On the top after getting through Blaencanaid Forest, there are some great views across the top of the Cynon Valley. From there, it was straight forward getting down through the forest tracks and down into Aberdare, although the path is steep at times and varies from stoney forestry tracks to narrow rocky tracks in places....

Also the final path down off the mountain has now been planted with trees so I had to find an alternative route into the town....

it then joins a nice easy to follow road however with about 4 miles to go the route headed into some very dense overgrown woodland and I had to find another path as I could no longer stay on the one suggested....

Danger, beware of fast mountain bikes hurtling down the hill in the Centre grounds. Fallen trees block path in the Forestry Commission woods. Route is too vague though heather on slope down to Mountain Ash....
