Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

26 Jul 2022 Summer

July 2022. Direction: Mountain Ash to Merthyr.

There are some great views from this walk and the first part up to the top of the mountain was hard work, but well worth the effort. It had rained earlier in the day, and on the steep slopes, it was sometimes a case of three steps forward, two slides back. Also, at this time of year, there was a lot of swimming through bracken to do, so I got soaked, but it was all worthwhile for the views.

The negative aspects was on the downward slope as it crosses the areas used by Bike Park Wales. There are lots of routes across a huge area amongst the forestry, so you need to keep your eyes and ears open up there.

The route starts by following the taff trail but soon climbs up and over towards Mountain Ash. The route has a very big climb towards the start and passes through the mountain bike centre, so be very careful as you share the route with some very fast moving bikers. Once you get to the top you are rewarded with some great views. On the way down the route has a few issues with fallen trees so a few detours was needed. Also the final path down off the mountain has now been planted with trees so I had to find an alternative route into the town. I've included this newly planted section in my photos and highlighted the path.

Danger, beware of fast mountain bikes hurtling down the hill in the Centre grounds. Fallen trees block path in the Forestry Commission woods. Route is too vague though heather on slope down to Mountain Ash.
