Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Jun 2025Really enjoyed this route. Masham and Bedale both attractive North Yorkshire towns full of life. Parked in Masham market square, parking only £1 honesty box for all day and public toilets close by. On leaving Masham (passing the quaintly roofed Victoria Jubilee Well) over the River Ure bridge you are quickly in fields. We had to navigate passed some cows in one field. Numerous stiles (a couple a little rickety) so not great from an accessibility perspective - and also a couple that were very narrow squeeze gaps to get through. Quite a lot of the first half of the walk up to Snape is on quiet country roads so terrain good. Very few vehicles. You cross a field to enter Snape from the south - very attractive village with a beautiful castle Manor House which is a private residence. You can however visit the Castle Chapel (clearly signposted on the route) which we did - beautiful chapel. We had our picnic on the steps. A gorgeous archway with beautifully smelling roses and wild flowers. After Snape it is mainly public footpaths. As you skirt Thorp Perrow Arboretum and Falconry Centre ensure you spot the footpath through the trees to take you into a field. Then as you cross the field head towards Hol Beck in the corner of the field. Cross the drive way then again look for a path in the tree line (bit tucked away). Then you enter Firby for a small stretch then back on the public footpath via a narrow wooden stile. You then cross a stream via a wooden bridge in a copse of trees and head out to walk across crop fields as you approach Bedale. On the outskirts of Bedale you follow paved paths through an area of houses. You then pop out onto the main road of Bedale which leads to the Market Place and the bus stop where you can get the bus back to Masham (limited service only certain days of the week and only a few buses per day). We visited St Gregory’s church which was lovely and tranquil, lots of cafe options in Bedale, and bus back. A super day of walking. OS tracked us at just over 8 miles. Felt very safe throughout. The route was accurate. Couple of places in fields where footpath not marked or visible and you need to follow OS map. Interesting walk with Snape mid point. I would recommend it.
